The ATO provides tailored technical assistance in some circumstances, which can be provided either orally or in writing, depending on the nature and complexity of each query.

A taxpayer or their adviser may need to seek tailored technical assistance if:

  • they’re not able to find the ATO view of how a tax law applies to a particular technical issue
  • they’re not certain how the ATO’s view of the law applies to your client’s (or even your own) circumstances
  • you or your client feel that there is a need for greater certainty (that is, protection) than the ATO’s published products provide.

Contacting the ATO by phone
For information about general, straight forward and simple issues, there are different telephone numbers to use depending on the identity of the caller.

If you are a tax agent seeking oral guidance, phone the ATO on 13 72 86. You will be required to have your registered agent number (RAN) and proof of identity may also be needed.
